Short Bio:
Dr. Md. Abdus Salam Akanda is a Professor at the Department of Statistics in the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2014, Dr. Akanda received his Ph.D. with distinction and honour from the University of Évora (Portugal) under the Erasmus-Mundus Mobility with Asia (EMMA) scholarship program funded by European Union (EU). He received his M.A. in International Political Economy (Major in Economics) in 2009 from the University of Tsukuba (Japan) under the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP). He earned his M.Sc. in Statistics in 1999 and B.Sc. (Honours) in Statistics in 1998 from the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh) with First Class distinction. For his extra-ordinary performance in B.Sc. (Honours) examination, he received the Dean’s Special Award. For his brilliant contributions in original research while holding the post of Associate Professor, he was blessed again with the Dean’s Award and Gold Medal from the University of Dhaka. In 1994, Dr. Akanda passed his Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) Examination from Cantt. Public School & College, Bogura and obtained first division with star marks. In 1992, he passed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Lakshmipur Bilateral High School in Gaibandha district and achieved first division with star marks. He has been taking various courses of both the undergraduate and graduate programs in Statistics since his joining in 2003. His primary research areas of interest include Statistical Ecology, Longitudinal Studies, Social Sciences and Health Economics. More recently, he has been involved in methodological development utilizing Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) in capture-recapture studies. He has also been supervising a good number of research students at graduate level. He is a member of the Research Centre in Mathematics and Applications (CIMA-U.E.) at the University of Évora, Portugal. He is the member of editorial board of several journals including Health Promotion International, Journal of Advanced Social Research (JASR), and International Journal of Sociology and Anthropology (IJSA). Dr. Akanda is the author of 3 books and has published over 26 peer-reviewed research papers, and more than 10 conference papers. These scientific papers have been published in both local and international journals. He visited more than 17 countries around the world for his academic and research purposes including Austria, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Nepal, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United States of America (USA). He loves to teach and conduct research in his areas of interest.
